Maintenance of phenotypic plasticity is linked to oxidative stress in spadefoot toad larvae

چکیده
Phenotypic plasticity allows organisms to improve the match between their phenotype and heterogeneous environments. Theoretical models have argued that costs of maintaining sensory response machinery necessary for adaptive phenotypic are important determinants evolution plasticity. Despite recurrent arguments invoking putative metabolic associated with maintenance cellular machinery, no studies yet attempted quantify it from a molecular standpoint. Here we experimentally examine physiological differences across genotypes (sibships) spadefoot toad larvae different degrees in predator cues. We observed marked sibships developmental, growth morphological responses predators, tested whether increased was oxidative stress or immune suppression. more plastic experienced higher antioxidant enzymatic activity when reared absence cues, i.e. not expressing responses. The degree also lipid peroxidation slightly greater granulocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio. Higher highly suggests may be linked energy demanding processes. Our findings suggest having potential produce incur immunological costs. In long term, such erode individual fitness even constrain To our knowledge, this is first empirical evidence indicating existence cost

Density-dependent mating tactic expression is linked to stress hormone in Woodhouse’s toad
The social environment can alter mating tactic expression through modulatory effects on the endocrine system. In anuran amphibians (frogs and toads), males often adopt noncalling mating tactics in response to increased chorus density, but the underlying physiological factors mediating this response are poorly understood. Recent models suggest that density-dependent expression of alternative mat...
متن کاملPhenotypic plasticity in response to dietary salt stress: Na+ and K+ transport by the gut of Drosophila melanogaster larvae.
Drosophila provides a useful model system for studies of the mechanisms involved in regulation of internal ion levels in response to variations in dietary salt load. This study assessed whether alterations in Na(+) and K(+) transport by the gut of larval D. melanogaster reared on salt-rich diets contribute to haemolymph ionoregulation. Na(+) and K(+) fluxes across the isolated guts of third ins...
متن کاملProtective role of integrin-linked kinase against oxidative stress and in maintenance of genomic integrity
The balance between the production of reactive oxygen species and activation of antioxidant pathways is essential to maintain a normal redox state in all tissues. Oxidative stress caused by excessive oxidant species generation can cause damage to DNA and other macromolecules, affecting cell function and viability. Here we show that integrin-linked kinase (ILK) plays a key role in eliciting a pr...
متن کاملEndocrine mechanisms underlying plasticity in metamorphic timing in spadefoot toads.
Amphibian larvae respond to heterogeneous environments by varying their rates of growth and development. Several amphibian species are known to accelerate metamorphosis in response to pond drying or resource restriction. Some of the most extensive studies to date on developmental responses to pond drying have been conducted on species of spadefoot toads (family Pelobatidae). We have found that ...
متن کاملEvolutionary reduction of developmental plasticity in desert spadefoot toads.
Organisms vary their rates of growth and development in response to environmental inputs. Such developmental plasticity may be adaptive and positively correlate with environmental heterogeneity. However, the evolution of developmental plasticity among closely related taxa is not well understood. To determine the evolutionary pattern of plasticity, we compared plasticity in time to and size at m...
